The foreigners in Vietnam are now facing with the treasure: their visa is going to expire soon but there is no flight to come back their country. In this case, visa renewal and visa extension are the solution. People who are getting stuck in Vietnam or even those who want to prolong their stay in Vietnam due to any reason can extend their stay by submitting visa extension application at Vietnam immigration offices. However, doing an administrative procedure has never been an easy job, especially for the one doing this job at the first time. In this article, we will guide you on how to do visa extension directly at Vietnam immigration offices.
In order to create more conveniences for foreigners and citizens of Vietnam to do the immigration paper works, Vietnam has set up a number of immigration offices in all regions of Vietnam. From the North to the South, you can come directly to the immigration office at the province you are living to process Vietnam visa extension. The Vietnam Immigration Department also arrange staff, officers to guide and answer questions directly at the Office and via Phone for who have questions or don’t understand the content of the New Immigration Law 2015.

Please note that there are also many immigration offices in Vietnam, but they are small office and only in charge of some specific cases. For visa extension and visa renewal, we recommend you should come to these three main offices.

Regarding individuals who entered Viet Nam for business, work, labor, visiting relatives or other purposes, the Immigration Department respectfully requests that the Embassy or Consulate General direct the citizen to their sponsors (agencies, organizations or individuals) according to the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit and Residence of Foreigners in Viet Nam. After preparing all required documents, the applicants must come directly to Vietnam immigration office to submit visa extension application. All office working time is 8:00 – 11:30 and 1:30 – 5:00 pm every day from Monday to Friday (excluded the Public Holiday).
The immigration officer will receive the application and check all required documents. If the documents are well-prepared, the application will be accepted and the applicants will get a receipt of application. Fees are paid in accordance with the regulations of the Ministry of Finance.
The Immigration Department will make determination within 05 working days from the day of receiving a valid and complete application as per the instructions above (in addition, a Diplomatic Note is required in case there is any additional request for special support).
After processing time, the applicants come back to immigration office and get back result. Normally, all cases of full document submission with no bad staying records will be approved for a new visa extension as the request.
All visa extension applications must be submitted before expiry date. If it is submitted after expiry date, the penalty fee for overstaying will be applied depending on how many days of overstaying. The procedure for getting a visa extended will be more difficult if the visa is expired, so make sure to process it before expiry date.
If the passport is going to expire or in case of lost passport, the applicants must renew the passport or do a travel document at the embassy/consulate before making visa extension application.
For those who don’t know much about immigration procedure, it’s recommended to use a visa agent to process visa extension. In this case, only passport is required and applicants will pay a small amount of money to process as service fee.
Vietnam government has automatically granted a visa extension by July 31th for those who entered Vietnam after March 1st 2020. If you belong to this case, you can stay in Vietnam up to July 31th without visa extension action.
