I no longer worked for the company which sponsored me for Vietnam temporary resident card (TRC). And this company is intending to cancel my temporary resident card soon. What should I do to prolong my stay in Vietnam? Can I apply for another temporary resident card or apply a visa extension? This is the questions we received a lot from our customers and we would like to answer in this article.
At first, you should know clearly about validation of Vietnam temporary resident card and regulation on cancellation the card.
The temporary resident card is issued for foreign nationals who want to stay a long time in Vietnam for working, investing or visiting relative purposes. Depending on the type, TRC can be valid from 1 year to 5 years. During the validation (showed on the card), the TRC holders can stay without extension in Vietnam, and they can exit and re-enter many times within the validation.
However, for working temporary resident card (categorized as LD), if the labor contract between the card’s holder and the sponsor company is suddenly stopped, or the card’s holder has not worked for that company anymore, the company can request to get back the TRC and cancel it.
Vietnam immigration department is the only organization can issue, extend and cancel Vietnam temporary resident card. The sponsored company cannot cancel TRC by themselves.
In order to prolong your stay in Vietnam when the sponsored company does not want to sponsor your TRC anymore, you should contact visa agent as soon as possible. The visa agent will help you to contact directly with immigration department and get a visa extension before the TRC is cancelled, and you will be still legal to stay more in Vietnam even the sponsored company gets back the temporary resident card and cancels it later on.
For those who used the temporary resident card to enter Vietnam or who entered Vietnam and then got the TRC can apply for 3-month visa extension. If you just want to stay for a short time, you also can choose 1-month extension. Both options are available and you can do it before the sponsored company gets back the card.
Of course, you also can apply another temporary resident card in case you work in a new company. This company will sponsor you again to get a new temporary resident card.
