Vietnam visa renewal is the action to renew the visa which is going to expire soon. It means that you will be granted a new visa sticker on your passport with the new duration permission. Vietnam visa renewal can be divided into two types:
Visa renewal without leaving Vietnam: This type of visa renewal is similar to visa extension. You can prepare some required documents and submit to Vietnam immigration when you are in Vietnam. After it’s accepted, your passport will be stuck a new visa sticker as well as new visa stamp, and you will be allowed to stay more in Vietnam with the new duration of time as the visa renewal indicated.
Visa renewal with leaving out Vietnam: This type of visa renewal is similar to new visa application. You can apply new visa at Vietnam embassy/consulate in any countries, or apply online (when you are in Vietnam or any countries), but to make the new visa valid, you have to leave Vietnam before the expiry date of the old visa and re-enter with the new visa. After your entry, your passport will be stamped a new stamp with new duration permission.
As mentioned above, visa renewal without leaving Vietnam is mostly the same with visa extension. Both can be done when you are in Vietnam. But the difference is, visa extension is used for single entry only, and the fee is cheaper than visa renewal. It means that your visa extension stamp will be immediately invalid when you exit Vietnam because it is single entry only. For visa renewal without leaving Vietnam, it can be multiple entry and you can use it to exit and re-enter many times as you want (as long as it is still valid).
For those who don’t want to leave and re-enter (due to complicated procedure, taking time, etc.), they usually choose visa extension to prolong their stay. Procedure for getting visa extended is not complicated if you do through a travel agent, only original passport is required. But when you do directly at the Immigration department, it will take more time and a lot of documents are required.
For those who have time to exit and re-enter, or having a plane to go out then come back Vietnam, via renewal is recommended. You can choose the date to re-enter and can change it according to the plan. The procedure to get a visa renewal with leaving Vietnam is very simple. It can be done online with only 3 minutes.
Both two types of visa renewal can be processed directly at Vietnam Immigration Department or through visa agents. If you have time and want to save cost, you should come directly to the address of Vietnam immigration department in Vietnam to submit visa renewal application. It will take more time to process, as well as more complicated documents are required. Another option is, doing through visa agent services. You will pay more for the service fee, but you will save a lot of time and avoid a lot of troublesome.
